Thinking in 3-D - The making of a new branded wax melt bar

Thinking in 3-D - The making of a new branded wax melt bar

Have you ever had a pause in creativity because your product didn't really seem like it belonged in your collection? Through the years I've used the typical plastic packaging like clamshells and oval portion cups. Eventually I landed on glassine bags, but the bars of wax just didn't excite me. I purchased dozens of molds, but none seemed right.

Recently a 3D printer found its way into my studio after a chat with my dad. I had never used CAD programs in the past, but something told me it was that one key thing that was missing in my life at the time. I sat with the scary program on my screen and the machine beside me and dove in. It was like a new part of my brain lit up. Tinkering with CAD has me thinking in all new directions practically all the time.

My goal with all products is to make things that I can instantly identify as my own. If everyone tossed their wax melts, for instance, on a table, could I pick my own out easily? After printing a few prototypes, I landed on a size and shape that makes me incredibly happy. Yes, I can without any shred of doubt pick out my own wax melt bars from any collection.

I hope you do something today that makes you happy.
